Remington 700, .30-06 - Bolt-Action Rifle
The Remington 700 is a favorite of US Marine sharp-shooters and shooting gurus the world over. Gunsmiths like it because the action is both extremely common, and therefore, extremely familiar, and easy to work on. Remington offers their model 700 in a multitude of finishes, stock types, and cartridges, all on one of two basic actions, long or short. To date, there are more than 30 “flavors” available directly from Remington, and an incalculable number of after-market modifications and accessories available for a weapon with a history that spans over 50 years. Market price can range from $650 to upwards of $1500 or more, depending on what bells and whistles are desired, who has them for sale, optics, and availability.
The Remington 700 is chambered in nearly every commercial and / or military cartridge under the sun, and is offered direct from Remington in that cartridge in at least one of the above mentioned “flavors.” This renders a great deal of flexibility in choice of details when a given purpose is considered.
In GURPS terms, as far as the Remington 700 chambered in .30-06 is concerned, it is an essential clone of the 1903 Springfield of WW1 and WW2 fame. I am including this as a point of reference. The aforementioned after-market modifications can improve nearly any specific area of performance desired, and sometimes several at once. For those tactically inclined, but who don’t wish to draw attention to themselves for having a “tactical,” or, “military” weapon, one can order a Remington 700 in an unassuming wooden stock, and then have a gunsmith modify the weapon to suit the shooter’s tactical needs, while still keeping the appearance of a “hunting” rifle.
